Based upon information from several official government and embassy websites, the Southeast Asian nation of Malaysia has ended all COVID-19 entry restrictions as of August 1, 2022.

As stated on the official Malaysian tourism website:

From 1st August 2022, all travellers are allowed to enter Malaysia regardless of their COVID-19 vaccination status and do not require a pre-departure or on-arrival COVID-19 test. There are no quarantine orders related to COVID-19 enforced by the Malaysian Government upon arrival.

In a statement from the British Embassy website:

As of 1 August 2022 all entry requirements related to COVID-19 travel to Malaysia have now been removed, regardless of vaccination status. However, you may still be requested to download the MySejahtera app but are no longer required to fill in the travel pass to verify your vaccine status.

Though fully vaccinated travelers have been able to enter Malaysia without quarantine or testing for months by uploading their health info to the MySejahtera app, those who remained unvaccinated or unable to prove their vaccination status were still subject to a mandatory COVID-19 PCR test within two days of departing for the country, followed by a rapid antigen test no more than 24 hours after arrival.

However, these requirements have now ended, and all are welcome to visit Malaysia, regardless of vaccination status, with no additional testing or quarantine requirements. Visitors may still be asked to use the MySejahtera app, but it no longer contains a mandatory health form to fill out.

Are There Still Any COVID Restrictions Once Arriving in Malaysia?

There are a few. Malaysia no longer requires the public to wear masks outdoors, but you may be required to mask-up inside buildings and on planes, trains, and buses, or before taking your seat at a restaurant. Regardless, it is important to pay attention to all mask ordinances, as Malaysian authorities may fine you for breaking them.

Malaysia Travel Insurance

The health risks of traveling abroad to Malaysia have not ended just because the COVID entry requirements have. Malaysia is still averaging over 4,000 new COVID-19 cases per day as of this writing, and even fully vaccinated/boosted individuals can test positive.

Even outside of the COVID risk, there are many other injuries and illnesses that no vaccine can protect you from. Imagine badly twisting your ankle while visiting Kuala Lumpur, or getting severe heatstroke from overexertion in the sun. There are myriad reasons you could need professional medical care while visiting Malaysia, and travel medical insurance is essential to help you pay for treatment abroad.

If you’re a US resident and want financial protection in case of trip cancellation, travel delay, baggage loss, emergency medical coverage, and coverage for other travel mishaps, consider purchasing travel insurance for your Malaysian trip.

If you’ve been waiting for restrictions to ease before taking that long-awaited trip to Malaysia, now is the time. With the right insurance in your corner and a sense of adventure, you’ll be ready to go.
